ICOs and cryptocurrency projects in general have often faced legacy questions. The space has seen a significant number of scams and legislation on the subject is not yet final. Therefore many established companies have decided to ban advertisements of cryptocurrencies.

Ad Bans

The popular social network Reddit was already in 2016 among the first major platforms to ban cryptocurrency ads. In January 2018, Facebook announced a ban of cryptocurrency ads. Only two months later, in March 2018 Google announced as well a ban on cryptocurrency advertisement and the companies Snap, Twitter and Mailchimp followed soon thereafter. [1] The bans were not received well by blockchain supporters and the Eurasian Blockchain Association announced a law suit against the bans.[2]

Reasons for Ad Bans

Some people argue that the risk of being held accountable for promoting potentially illegal investment opportunities is one of the reasons why the above mentioned large corporations decided for ad bans. However, some people argue the bans from these large centralized organizations come because they are afraid of being replaced by emerging decentralized solutions. [3]
