Infinium-8
Infinium-8 (INF8) is a coin that uses CryptoNote protocol and has a strong focus on privacy of the user. It was established with an aim to become a fungible and untraceable digital medium of exchange. Developers promised that it will intrinsically have a higher degree of anonymity than Bitcoin or any of its various forks due to the implementation of CryptoNote protocol. Infinium-8 was announced on July 17, 2014 on Bitcointalk forum and launched on July 18, 2014.

Infinim-8 developers mentioned following features as main advantages of their cryptocurrency:

Most of following features directly derived from the implementation of CryptoNote protocol. Infinium-8 is a Proof-of-Work cryptocurrency that uses Cryptonight hashing algorithm and has unlimited supply of coins, 90 sec block retargeting and difficulty retargeting performed each block. Block reward is calculated with the following formula: Block reward = log2(difficulty) * 2^40, so that Infinium-8 block reward is increasing together with difficulty but much slower than difficulty: for 1 coin to be added to block reward a difficulty must be increased twice. On the time of writing this article, Infinium-8 official website - http://www.infinium-8.org is not active, latest commit to its source code happened on the day of the launch of the coin, major cryptocurrency exchanges do not provide operations with it and it is not listed on coinmarketcap.com. As Infinium-8 has no announced work on re establishment and no team of enthusiasts to work on it, this cryptocurrency may be considered dead.
CryptoNote protocol
CryptoNote is a technology that was designed to become a base for the development of untraceable cryptocurrencies with strong focus on security and privacy of transactions. Intended effect was reached with implementations of ring signatures, double-spending protection and egalitarian proof-of-work. Due to the mentioned features CryptoNote was able to offer unlinkable transactions, untraceable payments, blockchain analysis resistance and other features that were pursued by the team of Infinium-8. The first cryptocurrency to adopt CryptoNote was Bytecoin. Bytecoin team developers implemented CryptoNight hashing algorithm that was built on core on CryptoNote protocol and developed one of the most secure, adaptive and anonymity-centered cryptocurrencies at the time. ByteCoin gathered positive feedback from blockchain community, became a base for multiple forks, including Infinium-8, and remains one of top cryptos on the market. Other famous examples of CryptoNote-based cryptocurrencies include Monero, Boolberry and QuazarCoin. CryptoNote was at first developed in Java for faster launch, and then re-written in C++ in 2013, its code is open source and is presented on GitHub.
Wallets
Infinium-8 does not have its own wallet so users should use simplewallet to mine and store INF8 coins. SimpleWallet can be launched at GitHub as a web page or downloaded on your local drive to run in the browser .
Mining
Infinium-8 mining can be performed solo and with mining pools. However, links to mining pools that are mentioned on Infinium-8 announce page (Xmining, Extreme Pool, Yaymining) are not responsive or active. The instruction on how to start mining solo is available on Infinium-8 announce and consists of next six steps:
- First of all, you should download or compile binaries
- Then you start infiniumd.exe
- After network is synchronized, you will be notified with "SYNCHRONIZED OK" message
- Then you run simplewallet and create a new wallet or open the existing one
- Type: “start_mining %number_of_threads%.” Example: “start_mining 3"
- You can also start mining from the daemon with “start_mining %wallet_address% %number_of_threads%” command. Example: “start_mining inf8U2kpouwiAr2cMLHsTqVijc 6”
Trivia
BitcoinTalk user with a nickname Nimos wrote on Infinium-8 announce page that he is considering helping with the development of INF8. He wrote that he might use Infinium-8 core code and rebrand it with adding new features, changing logo/name, building GUI interface for a wallet and so on. However, last time Nimos was active on BitcoinTalk is February 14, 2015.
